Three Things To Know About Healing from Religious Trauma…
If you have experienced spiritual abuse, a faith crisis, deconstruction, or symptoms of religious trauma here are a few things I want you to know…
You are not alone.
A significant community of people exists who have walked through challenges similar to what you are currently facing. It may take some time to find others who understand what you are going through, and that is okay. Sometimes, just knowing you are not the only one can be comforting, as many people have navigated difficult journeys in recovering from religion.
You are not to blame.
If you have experienced abuse in a religious environment, it was not your fault. Occasionally, religious groups imply that "nothing bad can happen here" because they claim divine moral influence. However, this is not true. Abuse can happen in churches and religious communities, and it is never the fault of those to whom it occurs.
If you are undergoing a shift in your beliefs, you are not doing anything wrong. It is acceptable to question religious teachings. In fact, asking questions is a sign of critical thinking, safe spiritual engagement, and growth.
There is a path to recovery.
Religion influences core aspects of the human experience, meaning that recovery often takes time, intention, and support. Despite the numerous layers and challenges associated with the journey towards recovery, it is possible. People can go on to lead full, meaningful lives after navigating a religious recovery journey.
